Businesses reminded to act before SMS changes on 1 July

The way businesses and organisations send branded text messages is changing.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is reminding businesses that if they use a branded SMS sender ID, they will need to register it under the new system.

From 1 July 2026, new rules mean texts sent with an organisation’s name at the top of a message (known as a branded sender ID), will need to have the sender ID registered.

The SMS Sender ID Register will stop scammers using branded text messages to impersonate well-known brands and organisations.

If you’re a business or organisation that sends branded text messages with sender IDs, you must contact your telco or message provider to register your sender IDs before 1 July 2026.

If you don’t, your text messages may be labelled as ‘unverified’ and will be grouped together with other ‘unverified’ messages, including scam messages on mobile phones.

Registering your sender ID means your customers can trust that messages from you are legitimate.

This change is particularly important for businesses that send appointment reminders, customer updates, booking confirmations, marketing messages or verification codes via SMS.

To find out about the changes and how they apply to you, visit the Australian Communications and Media Authority website.

If you require additional assistance understanding the changes, go to the Business Territory website to contact your Territory Business Advisor.
