A foundation for future growth
An incorporated association is a not-for-profit group that has registered to become its own legal entity.
Rather than the organisation existing only through its individual members, incorporation gives the group a separate legal identity.
This allows an incorporated association to do things such as enter into contracts, hold insurance, employ staff, apply for government grants, purchase property and continue operating as members and committee members change over time.
Incorporation can provide an important foundation for the future, helping community ideas develop into established organisations that continue contributing to the Territory across the long term.
In the Northern Territory, incorporated associations operate under the Associations Act 2003 and have a constitution, members and a committee or board responsible for managing the organisation.
The Northern Territory Government provides information and guidance to help associations start, manage and strengthen their organisations so they can continue contributing to Territory communities.
With incorporation comes responsibility
Associations need to meet legal and administrative obligations, including maintaining records, managing finances, holding required meetings and operating in accordance with their constitution.
Good governance helps make those responsibilities clear.

The Northern Territory Government provides governance support to help incorporated associations build their knowledge and capability.
Through the Stronger Associations Program, eligible Territory associations can access governance health checks and practical information sessions covering areas including committee roles and responsibilities, decision-making, meetings, financial management, constitutions and regulatory requirements.
