Data often holds incredible potential, but without the right tools or expertise, leveraging that potential can feel unattainable. For one dedicated professional in the Northern Territory (NT), unlocking the power of data not only transformed his vision into reality but also created an avenue to empower other businesses.
This is the story of Peter McMillan and his emerging business, Arafura Data, which is redefining how organisations can transform their data into actionable insights.
Pivotal connection leads the way
When Peter first toyed with the idea of starting a business, he had a clear vision. Yet, he also recognised a common challenge – how to articulate a winning value proposition and identify potential clients.
As a first step, Peter reached out to Vanessa Carusi, Regional Director for the Northern Territory Government’s Small Business Champion team. Vanessa connected Peter with Niall Richardson, from the Business Enterprise Centre Northern Territory (BECNT).
Peter said, "Having Vanessa connect me with Niall was invaluable. The support I received was instrumental in ensuring that Arafura Data could meet the needs of businesses.”
From idea to business launch in 30 days
Peter's entrepreneurial aspirations came to life through BECNT's Startup September programme where he accessed tailored support to take Arafura Data from business concept to launch in just 30 days. He followed this up by attending multiple sessions at October Business Month 2024.
He credits these resources with not only helping him refine his business model but also instilling the confidence needed to turn his idea into action.
A growing success
Armed with new skills, connections, and a deep passion for storytelling through data, Peter launched his business in early 2025. Named Arafura Data and featuring a tagline ‘where data meets purpose’, Peter is delivering a range of data-driven services including reports and dashboards, data analysis and strategic insights, data storytelling and advocacy support, data skills development as well as funding support.
To date, Peter has generated considerable interest in Arafura Data’s services and completed his first project. One of his specialties is translating complex data into persuasive narratives to optimise decision making.
He said, “Storytelling isn’t just for marketers; it’s a way to communicate effectively and engage stakeholders, driving the impact organisations strive for.
“Crafting compelling data stories can strengthen advocacy efforts, enhance funding, or boost investment in projects and organisations.
"It can also help you better understand how your business is performing and identify opportunities for improvement."
For entrepreneurs in the NT, Peter's success serves as an inspiring example of how strategic partnerships and access to valuable resources can transform an ambitious dream into a powerful reality.
