The Northern Territory Government is inviting industry and community feedback on a review of the Plumbers and Drainers Licensing Act 1983 to ensure licensing laws remain contemporary, effective and fit for purpose.
The Act has remained largely unchanged for more than 40 years, despite significant developments in industry practices, technology and workforce requirements.
The review will consider opportunities to modernise the Territory's plumbing and drainage licensing framework while maintaining strong community and consumer protections.
Key areas of consideration include:
- improving clarity and consistency in licensing requirements
- supporting workforce mobility across Australian jurisdictions
- maintaining effective regulatory oversight and consumer protections
- minimising unnecessary regulatory complexity.
The review aims to establish a balanced regulatory framework that supports industry needs while ensuring appropriate standards are maintained.
Plumbers, drainers, businesses, industry associations and other interested stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback.
Feedback received during consultation will inform the development of any proposed changes to the legislation.
Consultation closes on Friday 6 November 2026.
