About the Big Rivers region
Katherine is a hub to the Big Rivers region and services a large dispersed population in one of the Northern Territory's most diverse regional economies. Katherine connects multiple industries to the north, south and west building our capability in logistics and agribusiness infrastructure. The region has potential to thrive through planned projects across our growth sectors, we have collaborative approach to industry and business development, and are forward thinking in our drive to grow and prosper.
The region is experiencing a period of economic growth, driving essential collaborations that are addressing infrastructure gaps, entrepreneurial opportunities and an increased need for a skilled workforce. The region has a broad-based economy with agriculture, beef cattle export, resource industries, tourism, Defence and defence support industries and government service delivery.
Significant projects are underway, including $1.2 billion RAAF base Tindal civil and construction projects, Katherine Logistics and Agribusiness Hub, Katherine East Neighbourhood Centre, On-Shore Gas exploration, Roper Valley Iron Ore project, Seafarms’ large-scale prawn farm project and $1.1 billion Remote Housing Investment Package. Through an integrated regional industry, business and workforce plan we aim to drive opportunities that grow business, private investment and facilitate training that leads to greater local employment and employment opportunities within the Big Rivers region.
