Nominate now for the 2020 NT Training Awards

Nominations for the 65th Northern Territory (NT) vocational education and training (VET) awards are now open.

The NT Training Awards are the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation’s annual premier event recognising training excellence and achievements by Territory businesses, training organisations and trainers, apprentices, trainees and students.

Senior Executive Director for Business and Workforce Cathy White said the awards demonstrate the diversity of training in the Territory, with nominations received from a variety of sectors including electro technology, carpentry, mechanical technology, digital media, health, fitness, management, retail, agriculture, hospitality, childcare and construction.

“Last year, one quarter of nominees came from remote areas across the NT including Jabiru, Nhulunbuy, Alyangula and Lajamanu.

“The awards offer finalists the chance to gain personal success and to be recognised as part of an elite group of ambassadors who represent the Territory’s best. Winners and runners-up of each category receive a share in cash prizes, and have the opportunity to represent the NT at the Australia Training Awards.

“Darwin tradesman Rory Milner, a former engineer who undertook a construction apprenticeship, took home the top individual honour, the 2019 Austin Asche Apprentice of the Year and went on to win the Australian Apprentice of the Year in Brisbane.

“Alice Springs student and trainee technician Jack Short won the 2019 Northern Territory Trainee of the Year was also named Runner-Up Trainee of the Year at the Australian Training Awards.

“To follow these accolades, Territory VET teacher Judith McKay received the National Achievement Award for her outstanding contribution to the national VET sector in 2019.”

There are thirteen award categories, comprising of eight individual categories and five organisation categories.

  • School-based Apprentice of the Year
  • VET in School Student of the Year

  • Large Training provider of the Year
  • Industry Collaboration Award
  • Small Employer of the Year
  • Medium Employer of the Year
  • Large Employer of the Year.

Organisational categories

  • Small Training Provider of the Year
  • Large Training provider of the Year
  • Industry Collaboration Award
  • Small Employer of the Year
  • Medium Employer of the Year
  • Large Employer of the Year.

Winners will be announced at the annual gala dinner at the Darwin Convention Centre on Saturday 19 September.
