Gas service and supply plan released

Published

The Northern Territory’s gas service and supply plan has been released at an Energy Club NT briefing in Darwin.

Supported by 90 representatives from the Northern Territory (NT) service and supply sector, the plan outlines the strategic steps in place to develop the service and supply chain and maximise business and workforce opportunities in the Territory.

A recent ICN study identified an approximate $400 million annual operational spend by LNG operations in the Territory, with NT businesses capturing around one quarter, or $100 million, of this opportunity.

In preparation for future industry growth, the NT Government has developed the gas service and supply plan which aims to double the level of local content in gas industry contracts to at least 50% by 2025, and maximise NT workforce participation across all phases of development and operation.

Chief Executive of the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation, Mr Shaun Drabsch said, “The Territory has successfully delivered world-class gas projects, demonstrating that our local businesses are highly skilled and ready to be involved in future offshore gas projects.

“The government is supporting Territory businesses to be competitive and well-informed about opportunities in the gas sector and this plan aims to deliver long-term benefits for Territorians.”

The plan has three key focus areas:

  1. strengthening the commitment to local content by gas operators and contractors
  2. growing local workforce and business capability, and
  3. strategically developing the service and supply ecosystem.

The NT Government, local businesses, operators, contractors and industry groups will all work together to achieve the vision of positioning the Territory as a world-class gas production, manufacturing and services hub by 2030.

The release of the plan is timely with the department leading a delegation of 30 industry and business representatives to the Australasian Oil and Gas Expo and Conference (AOG) being held in Perth next week. AOG is Australia’s largest annual event focussed on the service and supply sector and provides an important opportunity to promote the Territory’s capacity.
