Innovation at its best
The world’s first virtual veterinary clinic has been designed by a Territory vet.
Susanna Samuelsson’s new i-vet website allows remote pet owners to take their animals to the vet - without leaving the house.
Dr Samuelsson gained an understanding of the tyranny of distance over seven years working with geographically isolated pets as owner of the Gove veterinary clinic.
"This came from out of necessity,” she said, “Pet owners were contacting us from all around east Arnhem Land, wanting help with their pets.
“They’d try to tell you what they thought was wrong, and it wasn’t until we started video conferencing that we realised the owner often missed vital symptoms.
“We could then work out what was wrong and we’d send medication or organise for the pet to get to the nearest vet clinic.”
More than just video conferencing, i-vet provides a stable online platform for video consultations, an online booking and payment system, an emergency on-call vet, and instructional videos.
She said i-vet had potential to be helpful for people isolated by illness and disability as well.
“Some of my family members have disabilities and I see how hard it is for some people to get to a vet clinic. This brings access to veterinary care into their homes.”
She credits the Business Innovation Support Initiatives voucher, through the Department of Business as being key to the development of the website.
“Without the voucher I doubt we would have been able to come to this final product,” she said.
“There are no virtual vet clinics out there so there were lots of unchartered waters, but integrating an online appointment system and trying to get that to talk to a management system was quite hard because it was the first of its kind.”
The system is being piloted in the Nhulunbuy region, before being launched to the world.

Carving out a niche
A new furniture-making venture in Milingimbi has celebrated a landmark, installing its first piece of boutique furniture at Rydges Palmerston.
The board room table is the first of Milingimbi Furniture’s ‘high end’ range, produced by the team of local trainees, which has been in training for almost a year.
A subset of the Arnhem Land Progress Aboriginal Corporation, the furniture business will see a master joinery craftsman running a commercial joinery and training a local team of Yolngu workers.
With the aim of providing high end furniture to a national market, Milingimbi Furniture will heavily market its product in southern states.
The enterprise will be mentored by Mark White, Chairman one of Australia’s largest and more successful shop-fitting and joinery businesses Ramvek Group.
A local team is also building the factory itself, and full production will begin when construction is complete at the end of July.
The furniture business is also being supported by the NT Department of Business through the Community Champions program.

NT WorkSafe is here to help: that is the message to small and medium businesses wanting to improve their work health and safety.
The Department of Business has established a pilot Small Business Safety Program to support businesses wanting to improve work health and safety standards.
Small Business Safety advisors will work one-on-one with business owners in their workplaces, provide personalised information and tools to help comply with regulations / manage their own work health and safety.
This means that rather than only being inspected for compliance, businesses are supported to comply with the legislation by advisors, who don’t have the regulatory role.
Businesses can also request presentations and information sessions, group coaching, and guidance material.

Entries open for Telstra Business Women’s Awards
Entries are now open today for Australia’s longest running and most esteemed women’s award program, the Telstra Business Women’s Awards, which for the first time will include a category to recognise business women in Asia.
The new Telstra Business Woman in Asia Award will be the sixth awards category, alongside Entrepreneur, For Purpose and Social Enterprise, Public Sector and Academia, Corporate and Private, and the Young Business Women’s Award.
Tianee Dohnt, Telstra Corporate Affairs Manager NT, said the new category is a reflection of Telstra’s growing presence in the Asia-Pacific region and will provide finalists and winners from Australia and across the Asian region the opportunity to expand their networks and build valuable relationships.
“The Asia-Pacific region is an economic powerhouse and presents great growth opportunities for Australian businesses. In addition to celebrating brilliant women, this new award will offer our awards Alumni the opportunity to foster valuable connections with business women in Asia and develop a greater understanding of how they are succeeding in this dynamic environment.”
The 2015 Telstra Northern Territory Business Woman of the Year, Mary Linnell, said the awards provide an opportunity for nominees to reflect on their achievements, set bold goals for greater success and join a vibrant Alumni community of like-minded women.
“The Awards process has given me the opportunity to reflect upon my journey and my success. Incubating baby businesses
A group of Territory business women have taken the next step towards success at next weekend’s Bump, Bub and Beyond Expo.
The event is a Territory market space boasting 100 stalls held by some of Darwin’s most talented work from home families and local businesses, offering products for pregnancy to parenthood.
A group of stall holders last month attended the Build Your Business Workshop to learn about starting and operating small businesses.
The workshop featured industry experts and Department of Business representatives talking about how to access grants and support systems, accounting basics, hands on set up, customer service and maximising social media benefits.
One of the event’s organisers, Danielle Andreoli said the Bump, Bub and Beyond Expo tried to offer stall holders more than just another market place.
“By offering this workshop and access to further information we aim to provide our stall holders with valuable tools and resources to establish successful businesses in the Northern Territory.”
