The Northern Territory has reached two important agreements that will support future jobs and economic growth.

Chief Minister Michael Gunner met with Representative Director President and CEO of INPEX Corporation, Mr Toshiaki Kitamura in Japan earlier this week where the two agreements were signed.

"Both the Recognition of and Recommitment to Industry Participation and the Optional Development Lease agreements presented opportunities for Territory business and jobs," Mr Gunner said.

"The Ichthys LNG Project has at least a 40-year life and the agreement means there will be ongoing opportunities for Territory businesses during the plant’s operations."

During the construction phase, more than 1,000 Territory businesses have secured work on the project.

More than $9 billion in contracts, procurement and overhead commitments have been made within the Northern Territory.

More than 8,000 people are working at Bladin Point during this final period of construction as the focus shifts to testing and commissioning works to prepare the facilities for the next 40 years of operations.

Further supporting future development in the Northern Territory, the Optional Development Lease (ODL) extension signing, provides certainty for INPEX and its potential to grow its LNG business in the Northern Territory.

The Chief Minister and other government representatives also inspected the shipyards in Geoje, South Korea where the INPEX-led Ichthys LNG Project’s central processing and floating production, storage and offloading facilities, as well as the Shell Prelude FLNG facility, are being constructed.

Once completed, the facilities will be located in the Browse Basin, west of Darwin and will create new business opportunities in the Territory.

"Our high-performing service and supply industries will ensure this sector’s growth which will deliver benefits for many Territory businesses," Mr Gunner said.

"The $110 million Marine Supply Base in Darwin is a critical link in the supply chain for international oil and gas companies, who use it to replenish their projects in the resource-rich Timor Sea and Browse Basin."

"Ultimately, the Ichthys LNG Project’s central processing and floating production, storage and offloading facilities along with Shell’s Prelude FLNG facility will use the Marine Supply Base to restock essential supplies such as food, water and drilling equipment."

Darwin’s proximity to major markets is an advantage for delivery, with sea shipments from Darwin to Tokyo needing only to travel 3,000 nautical miles - fewer than nine days voyage - and significantly faster than travel from other locations.

A few tips to help get your business cyclone ready:

  • Compile an up to date contact list for your employees, suppliers and products.
  • Provide your after hours contact details for the Police register. You can update you details via the business proprietors after hours contacts form.
  • Make sure you have copies of your insurance policy, financial and banking or any other important documents saved on a memory stick or external drive that can be quickly and easily retrieved.

  • Check your property and infrastructure and ensure your business is secure.
  • Regularly back up data onto USB memory sticks and external drives.
  • Have a spare set of keys and security codes in place.

OBM wraps up

Television personality and Chairman of Leo Burnett, Todd Sampson has capped off a remarkable month of business events across the Territory.

Earlier this week more than 500 people attended the closing event in Darwin to hear Todd’s keynote speech about the Power of Creativity - a celebration that explores innovative ideas, creative techniques, culture change and problem solving.

This year’s OBM has seen a fantastic line-up of inspirational speakers and events, with a new format that saw 100 events held across the Territory with around 6,500 attendees.

We have heard from some of Australia’s leading industry experts including Janine Allis, founder of Boost Juice and investor on Shark Tank; Sarah Wilson, entrepreneur and founder of IQuitSugar.com; Steven Bradbury, Olympic gold medallist and businessman; Mark McCrindle, award winning social researcher; and Territory export and inventor of the HEG, Scott Boocock.

A highlight of this year’s program has been the celebration of Territory business success stories through the OBM Territory Business Heroes series. Thank you to Darryl Thomas, Helen Summers, Tim Lambert, Mary Linnell, John Tourish, Tom Falzon and Anya Lorimer for sharing your inspiring stories.

Another highlight was the inaugural Nhulunbuy Business Week, designed to support the town’s vision of being a self-sufficient and sustainable community.

The Nhulunbuy business community embraced the week with more than 350 attendances across the forums.

One of the event’s organisers, the project manager for Nhulunbuy Town Vision, Maria Robbins, said they received overwhelming positive responses from sponsors, providers, presenters and attendees.

"The majority of attendees said they learnt something new and felt inspired to improve or change some aspect of their business.

"It was also encouraging to see a number of community members motivated and encouraged to start up or restart their small businesses on the back of the inaugural event," she said.

Women in construction

Gaynor McTaggart is paving the way for Territory women to forge successful careers in the building and construction industry.

In less than two years, Gaynor has already made inroads to promote the interest and increase participation of women in the sector.

Drawing on her experience, and at times struggles, in the industry Gaynor sought out the National Association of Women in Constriction (NAWIC) chapter in the NT in early 2015 to network, grow her knowledge and gain industry exposure.

"From my initial contact with NAWIC I was inspired to be a part of the growing network and assist in achieving their common goal to support women in the construction and related industries," she said.

Gaynor’s enthusiasm and fresh ideas were embraced by NAWIC and it wasn’t long after joining the committee she was promoted to NT Lead.

As the NAWIC NT Lead, Gaynor not only acted in the interest of the association, but was active in the community as an ambassador for women in construction.

She also spent much of her personal time meeting with influential figures in the NT to discuss issues such as gender imbalance in the construction industry.

"Diversity in the workplace promotes different viewpoints and often allows for innovative solutions. Women in construction can also challenge mindsets and help the industry to adapt to change," Gaynor said.

"I absolutely believe that there has been a shift in construction being a male dominated industry.

"With the support of all stakeholders in the Northern Territory and wider Australian construction industry, women are becoming more prevalent across the board in all roles which have been traditionally male-dominated: from tradeswomen, support roles, technical roles and advancing into management roles."

Encouraging young women to pursue their career dreams, especially in non-traditional fields, is another area Gaynor is passionate about and she spent some time last year mentoring young high school women.

"Having strong, relatable role models is encouraging. Female role models are able to offer mentoring and support to assist in overcoming those hurdles women are faced with," she said.

"To ensure a woman’s career advances in line with their male counterpart, there needs to be ongoing support for pay equality and progression. This requires all stakeholders to partake and support the progression of women in construction."

Last month Gaynor was recognised for her contribution to the sector and was awarded the highest honour at the NAWIC Crystal Vision Awards.

"NAWIC plays an intricate role in providing a platform for women and men to get together and share industry knowledge and ideas specific to the Northern Territory and the industry at large," she said.

"Receiving this award recognises the efforts of not only me, but of the committee who worked tirelessly alongside me to ensure NAWIC is a success in the NT.

"I am so proud of what we have achieved; this is just the beginning."

Cruise ship season underway

Darwin’s new cruise ship season is off to a stellar start with over 12,500 passengers visiting the Top End since mid-October.

During the last financial year cruise ship passengers spent an estimated record of $16 million, with the major beneficiaries being the Darwin CBD, waterfront precincts and local tour operators.

In 2016-17 Darwin is expecting 45 cruise ships to dock at Fort Hill Wharf.

Tourism NT’s Manager for Market Development Richard Schoonraad said this is an exciting time for tourism, business and hospitality in the Top End.

"I strongly encourage retailers, tour operators, cafes and restaurants to open their doors on these days and take advantage of the economic boost these visits could bring.

"If you have special offers or deals let passengers know and don’t forget to tell the crew members - they are your secret word of mouth army on board every ship," he said.

Planning ahead for each arrival has been made easy with the cruise ship schedule available online, go to the Darwin Port website.

"This is your opportunity to be an ambassador for Darwin and share your local knowledge. Whether it’s your favourite café, a secret shopping spot or directions for local amenities, friendly locals are remembered long after a visit," Mr Schoonraad said.

There are also a number of ways you can promote your business and be more visible during visits, especially those located in Darwin CBD.

"The Darwin City and Waterfront Retailers Association promotes these areas to all visiting cruise ships with balloons, entertainment and point of sale merchandise," Mr Schoonraad said.

"If you haven’t done so yet contact DCWRA about becoming a member; by supporting them they will support you."

"Another cost effective way to promote your business is via social media and Facebook advertising.

"While visitors check in with their family and friend on free Wi-Fi services in the Smith Street Mall and Waterfront areas you can target them via Facebook advertising and showcase what you have to offer," he said.
