Register now for the Home Improvement Scheme
Territory tradies and small businesses can register now to participate in the Home Improvement Scheme.
Businesses that are already registered will be asked to update their details online and confirm they still want to participate by accepting the new terms and conditions.
Homeowners-occupiers will be able to apply for a voucher through the scheme from 20 February 2017.
Homeowners who previously received a voucher will be able to apply again for another $2,000 voucher.
Homeowners who missed out last time, but are eligible, will be able to apply for a voucher worth up to $4,000.
Homeowners will have three months from the date the voucher is issued to complete the approved works and vouchers will only be approved for homes older than six months.
Other key elements of the scheme are:
- Up to 50% of the voucher can now be used towards the cost of goods and materials, which better reflects the nature of home renovation and improvements.
- Subcontracting is now allowed under the scheme, meaning tradies can now get help from other local tradies with specialised skills, as long as their details are included in the quotation and they’re also registered as part of the scheme.
- Integrity measures (including site spot audits) will be undertaken to ensure compliance.
Applications can be made until 31 December 2017 or unless funding is exhausted.

The Northern Territory Government (NTG) has announced further changes to strengthen the Buy Local policy.
These procurement reforms include policy actions to maximise opportunities for Territory enterprises, strengthened communication with industry and investment in the capability of the public service.
These reforms include a number of key actions and initiatives, namely:
- replacing the 'Value for Money' definition with a 'Value for Territory'
- placing a cap on the maximum weighting on price in tender evaluations to 30%
- prohibiting shortlisting on price alone
- providing tenderers with more detailed post-tender feedback
- requiring all major procuring agencies to provide regular industry briefing sessions
- requiring all agencies to publish agency forward procurement plans
- delivering public sector training and development initiatives including 'local benefit' training sessions, e-learning resources and a professional development forum for all NTG procurement professionals.
The Buy Local plan consists of a suite of measures designed to improve the way that local benefits are identified, evaluated and realised at all stages of the procurement lifecycle.
$5 million boost for tradies
Territory small trade businesses can now register their interests for the $5 million stimulus package for urban public housing repairs and upgrades.
The urban public housing repairs and upgrades package is part of the NT Government’s wider $22 million Immediate Work Stimulus package, announced in November 2016.
The package is designed to boost the construction industry, support local businesses and jobs and provide repairs and upgrades to urban public housing.
Small trade businesses can register to be considered for a range of public housing work including roof and fence repairs, disability modifications, upgrades to kitchens and bathrooms, and security door, window and lighting upgrades
The work will be delivered across Darwin, Palmerston, Nhulunbuy, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.
To be eligible for work, businesses must meet the following criteria:
- be a registered business within the NT
- have a workforce of 19 employees or less
- have an annual turnover of between $10,000 and $5 million
- not be a current NTG employee.

Economic Summit - have your say
Territorians are invited to have their say about the Northern Territory’s economic future through economic summits being held across the Territory.
Chief Minister Michael Gunner said the summits were part of the process to develop an economic framework that will shape the Territory’s future in partnership with Territorians.
"This is your opportunity to help develop a framework that will guide our long term planning," Mr Gunner said.
The Northern Territory Government, in partnership with independent consultants Deloitte, has delivered the first phases of consultations over the last three months, with industry groups, business, regional economic development committees and local stakeholders.
The initial consultations revealed a number of common issues across industries and locations. From these issues raised, six preliminary factors or 'levers' were identified: these include land, labour, capital, enterprise and innovation, connectivity, liveability. These priorities are being developed by Territorians.
"This week marks the start of the third phase of consultation; with the opportunity for the public have their say about the Territory’s economic future," Mr Gunner said.
"You can contribute to the discussion by providing comments on various themes and topic papers online, or by registering to attend one of the economic summits."
"We want to hear your feedback and ideas about jobs our future industries and areas for investment."
During March, the public will be able to provide input to the Economic Summits through a series of public consultation sessions.
Public consultation sessions will be held in:
- Darwin (Small Business session) - Wednesday 15 February
- Nhulunbuy - Thursday 2 March
- Tennant Creek - Monday 6 March
- Alice Springs - Tuesday 7 March
- Palmerston - Wednesday 8 March
- Katherine - Thursday 9 March
- Darwin - Monday 13 March.
During the fourth and final stage of consultation, two final summits will be held in Alice Springs on 24 March 2017 and in Darwin on 29 March 2017. At these summits a draft economic development framework will be presented to Territorians. Registrations to attend these summits will open soon.

Indonesia Australia Business Week
Territory businesses are invited to be part of a trade mission to the Indonesia Australia Business Week (IABW).
The second IABW, led by Australian Government Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo, will take place in Indonesia from 6 to 10 March 2017.
The 2017 program will contain five sector-specific programs including: food and agribusiness, tourism, vocational education and training, financial services and technologies, and resilient cities.
NT Government representative in Indonesia, Mark Bruny, said the event provides business owners and managers, in particular those from of the five sector streams, a unique opportunity to hear firsthand from key players in the Indonesia Australia trade relationship.
"These stakeholders include ministers, senior economists and CEOs from major Australian and Indonesian companies who have successfully traversed the business opportunities between Australia and Indonesia."
Indonesia is one of the Territory’s nearest neighbours and one of our largest trading partners, producing approximately $400 million worth of two-way trade per annum.
With a burgeoning consumer class of 60 to 70 million people, a large resources sector, and an insatiable demand for infrastructure, Indonesia continues to experience strong economic growth.
"This combination of demographics and growth, along with the upcoming IACEPA (Indonesia Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) has created a number of business and trade opportunities," Mr Bruny said.
"This is a great event for Territory businesses to explore the diverse commercial opportunities in Indonesia.
"It is also an opportunity for Northern Territory participants to gain first-hand knowledge of the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Indonesia," he said.
The IABW 2017 program will feature seminars, roundtables, site visits, product showcases and opportunities for networking with Indonesian businesses, industry and government.
